Dolly Parton was easy to underestimate. The big hair, the rhinestones, and the “aw shucks” Tennessee accent. Since her death, much has been written about Dolly’s profound success and her tremendous generosity. Underneath all that is a less recognized and perhaps even more important leadership strength.

Parton knew when to say no — even to Elvis

Early in her career, Elvis Presley wanted to record Parton’s hit “I Will Always Love You.” Then his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, reportedly insisted that Presley receive half the publishing rights. Parton said no.

Think about that. Elvis Presley calls. He wants your song. You’re still building your career. The opportunity could be enormous. You’d probably find a million reasons to say yes. Parton didn’t.

Though reportedly heartbroken, she understood the value of what she had created and refused to give it away simply because the person asking was powerful. That decision proved enormously valuable. She retained ownership when Whitney Houston’s version became a worldwide phenomenon.

Parton’s greatest leadership gift

Parton was remarkably good at loving people without losing herself. That meant knowing who she was, knowing what mattered, and setting boundaries. For leaders today, especially for those with loose boundaries, that can be the most useful lesson.

Try this quick thought experiment on setting boundaries and saying no: Picture one powerful person or enticing opportunity currently pulling you toward a yes, but one you feel mixed about. Now imagine saying no. Notice your immediate reaction.
